PCA’s Emeline Gaujac was interviewed by WGBH’s Adam Reilly to discuss the future of Fan Pier’s iconic Northern Avenue Bridge for Greater Boston’s television program and WGBH radio.
Back in 2016, an internal PCA Competition Team – Emeline, Hing Chung Fung, Erika Deroche, Steve Bryson, Rob Krauszer, and Chris Baker-Albertz – won the People’s Choice Award in the City of Boston’s Ideas Competition. Their design re-imagined the bridge as an active connector for pedestrians and cyclists between Boston and the Seaport District, with gathering spaces and parks offering places of respite and camaraderie and sweeping views of the City. At the time, Mayor Walsh remarked, “the ideas and conversation that we sparked during the [competition] process are tremendously valuable as we take the next step to design a new bridge.”
The City of Boston is following up on the design competition with plans to rebuild the bridge entirely. The debate currently centers around how much if any vehicular traffic should be accommodated on the restored bridge. Plans are still taking shape. We are excited to see what the future holds for this Boston icon….
